Partly Frozen James River.

We had lovely weather for the first camping trip of the season.

We were greeted by wild horses.

“Wild horses” or “feral horses”? The debate rages on in Alberta, Canada. The provincial government believes that the wild horses west of Sundre, Alberta are the descendants of domestic horses used in logging and guiding/outfitting operations in the early 1900’s. The Wild Horse Society of Alberta (WHOAS) believes that they are of Spanish descent. WHOAS is so sure of this that they have sent away DNA samples to the University of Texas, Equine Genetics Lab for testing.” – Wild Horses Of Alberta

A new study of wild horses launched

Partly frozen James River in Alberta, Canada.

Erik was quite worried that we were walking on the ice, and he was puzzled by the sound of the water flowing under the ice. The water wasn’t very deep, but it was very cold.

Even though the James River was still partly frozen, there were already a few mosquitos and midges out.

This was the temperature. The photos and video of the ice were taken on Tuesday the 2nd of May, so it was 24.9 Degrees Celsius where we were.

There was no way one could keep Erik out of the water.

We boondocked at one of our favourite spots, which we have named  Leatherback Turtle, which is on the James River between Bearberry and Limestone Mountain in Alberta, Canada.

We have traded our Dutchman camper in for a Jayco 2022 JAY FLIGHT 174BH Baja which is a bit smaller, lighter and much easier to pull and park. It has solar panels on the roof, an electric awning, lots of storage, a queen-sized bed and much more.

The view outside from the dinette window.

We were the only campers in the area. We had some thunder and rain, we use a gazebo to cover the firepit area.

Erik was overjoyed to go camping and quading again.

We love the LED exterior lighting.

A fire warmed us up in the evenings and kept the mosquitos and midges away. We use a homemade windshield and heat reflector for the firepit, which was made using Diamond Tread Aluminum Sheets and piano hinges. Idea from THE ORIGINAL FIRE REFLECTOR from Big tent outdoors.

The fire is in a ploughing disc with welded horseshoes for handles resting on a Collapsible Tripod. We bought 2 Potjie Tripod-Colapsable for no 2 & 3 Potjies at SA Meat shop, in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. We have also bought a KINDLING FIREWOOD SPLITTER, which works very well.

We made Chaffles for breakfast in a Cast Iron Waffle Pie Iron and a Jaflle Iron on our camp stove.

"The reason it’s called a chaffle is because it’s basically a cheese waffle. Cheese + waffle = chaffle.""They’re low in carbs and keto-friendly, but just like anything that’s tasty and delicious, it’s always best to eat in moderation." - The Pioneer Woman

I add mustard, salt and pepper to the batter.

The Jayco 2022 JAY FLIGHT 174BH Baja has plenty of clearance and 15" off-road tires so that you can take the road less travelled!

Review: Jayco Jay Flight.

We saw more wild horses on our way home.

“Our study involving the samples from Wild Horses, submitted by volunteer donors has revealed some extremely interesting results. Here’s what we do know. Our horses here in Alberta, are not of “Canadian Horse” decent, such as the ones studied by the same researchers in the Brittany Triangle, in B.C.. However, the most interesting connection is that just like the horses in the Chilcoltins, both studies show a connection to Russian breeds. The B.C. horses show markers indicating a connection to the Yakut, from Siberia, and our horses here in Alberta, are showing strong markers indicating a connection to the Altai, breed from Russia.”– Help Alberta Wildies
