Chinese Dragon Boat , 6.1999

We went to the Chinese Dragon Boat race. A cultural event of 2 days at Glenmore reservoir. (Dam) We were to late for the start, which must have been impressive. There were many Chinese people. The racing was more interesting for the teams and families, but we found the entertainment educational. We were just to late for a Sushi chopping competition, but in time for a drum display. The energetic type where they lunge and use the whole body.

About 6 people doing Belly-dancing, I found the solos very tasteful and enjoyable. One lady danced with faux candelabra. The other with a large scarf and one with a walking stick. There was even a male amongst them. All had those castanets like bells and the guy had a tambourine. Some of these girls looked in their late 40’s, with big flabby tummies, two were about 20.

These were followed by different styles of Martial arts. They had three different styles of Tai Chi, one with a sword. There were about 6 guys ranging in ages from about 20 –60. It was lovely to see men being so graceful.

The Chinese dragon boat races originated in China, with this famous statesman and first known poet of China, Qu Yuan, wanting to commit suicide by trying to drown and the boats charging out to save him.
