White Out
White Out: We have snow every second or third day, with sunshine in between, then everybody is out, even the kids, shoveling snow. The shops, library and malls are better than Richardsbay, but not as good as Calgary. The day we moved into our house it was blowing snow, the truck couldn’t get close to the house, so they shuttled everything with a smaller truck. Everything went well. An Afrikaans lady sent her British hubby, with a welcome plate. They live in Portugal Cove. The next day another Afrikaans lady popped in to introduce herself.
We saw many snow-mobiles off The Trans Canada Highway, which runs all the way from Vancouver Island to Newfoundland. People here have old trucks with a grader in front, to clean the drive ways, when they do ours we give them a bottle of wine, box of chocolate or something. People haul away snow in there Pick-ups. We saw people shoveling snow from their roofs. You see abandoned cars along the roads under snow.
One morning the men left in the Corolla, then I heard over the radio that the university was closed for the day, due to the blowing snow. As we only have one garage and it was still full of boxes, I got dressed, warmed up the Cherokee, which was outside, dusted off the snow from the whole car, scraped the windows of ice and drove off through a White out in 4 wheel drive. Just when I started getting desperate as I couldn’t see where the road was, Mr. Tokeloshe phoned and said he would fetch our son. I drove home again, only to be phoned again to go and fetch them. They were driving behind a grader, with a car behind them, the grader began to slide downhill and to get out of the way they all ended up in the ditches. We went to dig out the car, which was parked with others the next day.
