Highland Games, 9.1999

We went to the Highlander games held in Calgary. It was a lovely day. There were hundreds of little girls and even some boys competing in Scottish dancing. That was very interesting for me. A lovely girl of about 15 opened the competition with a sword dance. The announcer said that she was an international champion. Most wore pleated tartan skirts of different clans, with a matching scarf tied with a pin. They also had petticoats. Some wore white dresses, but all looked so neat with their hair tied up. (Something you don’t often see here.) The trophies were lovely too. Most did the same dance, so I guess it was like the badge tests.

I wonder how many does ballet, besides not putting down their heels and going higher on the point it looks allot like Ballet. There were many piping bands, also in lovely costumes, pole-throwing contests, and many stalls selling memorabilia and a sheepdog demo. This is the largest gathering of Scots I have seen.
