Frozen Conception Bay

We had heard that there was pack ice in Conception Bay, so we drove down there again on a sunny but cold day. Minus twelve plus wind-chill. We had been up there in the summer, if you remember my “Pirates” letter.

At Brigus, the tunnel was deep in snow, with ice underneath, first Mr. T. slipped and fell and then I, but we didn’t get hurt.

Icicles hung from the roof; unfortunately one can’t see them on the photos.

At Port de Grave, the boats were beautiful. It was so colorful, the fishermen paint their boats in winter, so they all looked brand new, and the colors were fantastic. Apparently they are crab-fishing boats, big money. New and big houses are still being built there. The bay was frozen solid for miles; there is snow on the ice. The boats look as if they are in snow. I sat on a boat, with one foot on the ice, a funny feeling, as the boat doesn’t move.

The wreck (sunken whaler) as well as the stranded S.S Kyle also stands on ice and snow. At Harbour Grace, we saw a clearing on the ice/snow for skating, Teenagers walked on the ice, I walked on the edge.
Taking photos is cold. Some people have trouble with the camera batteries freezing, but fortunately we don’t. A friend wraps her camera with a heated pad. One can buy small chemical heated pads, which are activated when you open and shake them. Fortunately we were dressed warmly, but our face and hands get cold when taking photos.
