Cape Spear

We went to Cape Spear again. The weather was lovely, at 11 degrees. We hiked for about 8 k’s, which took us 3 ¾ hours, along The Cape Spear Path, part of the East Coast Trail of which we have maps, there are books and information on the internet as well.

“The oldest surviving lighthouse in Newfoundland is located at the most easterly point of land in North America. It has been restored to its 1839 appearance and shows how a light keeper and his family might have lived in the mid-19th century. The site is surrounded by spectacular scenery and wildlife such as whales, seabirds and icebergs”

We could see the lighthouse Fort Amherst, at St. John’s from there. The hike is along the coastline; past a beautiful cove called Basket Cove. Our dog herded us like sheep, we call her “heen en weer” as she is up and down all the time. There are about 15 sunken ships recorded along this coastline. We hiked to Madam Cove from where we could see Petty Harbor, which is beautiful this time of year.
